The Holy Virginity
I did a pun.Also, spoilers for Splintered.
Why are adult authors often obsessed with
Most teenagers, I find, are a lot more relaxed about people losing their virginity (as long as it's consensual) than 40 year-old Susan from Devon.
The main example I can think of is Splintered. To quote myself:
"Alyssa's romance with Jeb annoyed me. He treats her like a child and sees her virginity as a major part of her...The whole "Jeb's obsession with Alyssa's virginity" thing was incredibly awkward to read. Why did it matter if she had sex with a guy? Although, in the example Jeb gave the guy would have been manipulating Alyssa, but that wasn't why Jeb was worried.Which makes you think he left Tae 'cause he probs had sex with her and has some weird virginity fetish."
Me @ Jeb: YOUR VIRGINITY ISN'T A MAJOR PART OF YOU.
Me @ the author: WYD?
An adult wrote all of that nonsense and thought, "yes, this is how teenagers work, this makes their relationship perfectly normal/ healthy". I don't even know why Jeb was fussing about Alyssa's virginity considering he was dating another girl and I'm pretty sure the age difference made it illegal or something. Can't remember their ages v. well.
Back to the quote,
He treats her like a child and sees her virginity as a major part of her...This is a bit of a contradiction as if you see someone as a child, you shouldn't be thinking about their sex life. And Jeb did treat Alyssa as if she was a child who couldn't think for herself. It was v. annoying to read. But then he goes on about her sex life. It's just a bit gross and weird.
If it was Alyssa herself who was obsessing over her own virginity, then that would make 5% more sense. It's her body, she can do what she wants with it
Maybe you could comment below about your opinions and other tropes you won't to see me talk about. Maybe.
